General Language
FTL controls general vocabulary only where doing so removes demonstrated or likely ambiguity. It
does not prohibit words that carry a useful semantic distinction. This page is the human-readable
view of the machine-readable vocabulary at
/api/latest/general-language.json.
Each entry records one preferred general word and the words that should not be used when the same meaning is intended. If two words carry a real technical distinction, the note explains it instead of prohibiting one.
The general-language vocabulary is intentionally small. It does not replace the domain terminology on the Terminology pages, and it is not a complete English dictionary.
24 entries in total. Entries marked for review are candidates that still require human semantic confirmation.

Meaningbegin execution of an operation or process
Avoid for the same meaningbegincommence
Note: Do not replace initialize or launch when those words represent distinct technical operations (initialization establishes state; launch creates or starts an application or process).

Avoid for the same meaningroughly
Note: Prefer approximately in normative or measured contexts. Roughly is acceptable in informal notes. If an exact figure exists, state it instead.

Meaningbring an operation or process to a close
Avoid for the same meaningterminate
Note: End is the general term. Terminate has a stronger, often abrupt connotation and is normative in domains such as OCPP session handling; keep it where abrupt or programmatic ending is intended. Finish is acceptable for user-facing prose.
change
Meaningmake a value, configuration, or behavior different
